Sugar Bush
Rhus ovata
20-30' tall / 20-30' wide
Sugarbush is a medium to large, evergreen shrub that is easy to grow, in fast draining soils, in low water conditions. Slow to moderate growth rate. The form of this plant is quite nice, growing into a tight, rounded ball. This plant is often found inland, where as its relative, Lemondeberry, if found more toward the coast.
In the garden, Sugarbush can be used as a privacy screen, slope stabilizer or foundational evergreen backdrop. Lemonade Berry is usually a better choice because it is less finicky. This plant is prone to branch die back when it is over watered. Be sure to plant Sugarbush at the top of a slope where it can have plenty of drainage.
