Mexican Mexican Manzanita is an evergreen shrub with gray green pointed leaves and a noticeably purple-maroon bark. A very drought tolerant plant that grows moderately fast. Seems to like some water and snow. This grows in Julian and handles pretty harsh conditions.

In the garden, it can be used as semi-screening shrub or a specimen with proper pruning. In February, this plant is covered in clusters of whitish-pink flowers that are adored by bees and hummingbirds. Keep a close eye on your ant populations.. Manzanitas are notoriously attacked by the Argentine ants that create nest and farm scale on the root system.
