Red Buckwheat is a small, flat growing perennial ground cover with medium leaves that are rounded and speckled with white. The plant grows moderate to fast and spreads by seed readily. The flowers are a dainty pink to deep pink and sit on little stalks. They look like little lollipops or cake pops. This plant is found on San Miguel Island. Like most Buckwheat, this plant is loved by butterflies.

In the garden, this plant is used a small scale ground cover and to fill in bare areas. You can grow it and spread the seeds, it will likely pop up. I treat this as an annual that last longer. You can pull out where ever you don’t want it, and trust it will grow back somewhere else. I have a patch that has been growing for many years and keeps expanding. The display is put on in late Summer. Loved by CA native plant enthusiast.
